Artinis Medical Systems is an innovative Dutch company active in the field of medical research and quality assurance. We manufacture Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) devices. Our NIRS devices can be used to monitor oxygen supply non-invasively in living tissue (both brain and muscle). Functional NIRS (fNIRS) can be used to measure the oxygenation changes in the cortex resulting from brain activation, like fMRI does by measuring the BOLD Signal. The BOLD signal is mainly correlated to the deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration change, where NIRS measures also the oxygenated hemoglobin changes. The advantages of NIRS over MRI are the price, the portability and flexibility, less sensitivity for movement artefacts.
